I founded and ran a national professional services firm. The first four years looked like success from the outside, but I'd made myself the single point of failure, and I'd stopped believing the best of my people because I couldn't imagine the business working without me.
It took twelve months to rebuild how I led: trading the control I was gripping so tightly for what my people were actually capable of. Over the next three years, the business that had plateaued grew 3X in revenue and 10X in EBITDA, and it kept growing past 40% market share. In 2023, I sold it for more than $70 million.
